Pieces to start working more with polyrhythms?
on: March 23, 2024, 10:52:31 PM
So I've recently started learning polyrhythms. I do different grades of technique for exams and this year on my exam (technique portion) I have to play eight notes and triplets (trying each in different hands). I really want to start playing more difficult pieces with polyrhythms (preferably the same one I'm learning now) so I was wondering if anyone could give some suggestions just to start out? Im not sure what it's called (like 3:4 3:2 etc) I'm sorry 😭

Thank you!

Scriabin's Op. 17 No. 3 prelude should help with 3:2. The only piece I can think of right now with 3:4 is the Fantaisie Impromptu (more like 6:4*2) but I don't know if that's too difficult for you technically or not.
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

The first two of Chopin's Three Nouvelle Etudes cover 3 vs 4 and 2 vs 3, respectively.

Also, the development section in Beethoven Sonata op14 #2, 1st mvmt (for 3 vs 2 )

Also,  Brahms 51 exercises cover a variety of polyrhythms in a way that's quick to learn.

If you want to get started with 3/4 I recommend Liszt’s Romance its hauntingly beautiful, it’s 4 pages long and considerably easier than Fantasie Impromptu.
