What is my next piece should be ?

Hi Everyone,

I have recently done working on Chopin Nocturne No.20 in C# Minor, I feel like I didn't struggle much with the piece even the scales at the end of the piece wasn't that hard for me. I also can play Chopin Nocturne Op.9 No.2.

Now I am looking for to learn a new piece, these are the pieces that I would like to learn next (in order)

1- Schubert Serenade (Liszt Arrangement)
2- Mozart Alla truca
3- Chopin - Fantaisie-Impromptu (Op. 66)

These are the pieces that I really like I want to play ? are they above my level compared to the pieces that I can play ? what other pieces you would suggest.

What did your teacher say in response to this question?

If you don't have one, I highly recommend you get one so that you are setting up good foundations.
I would recommend the Mozart next. The other two would be too difficult. Play the entire sonata - that would be a worthy challenge, I'm sure you'll like it - the entire piece is beautiful, you'll learn a lot. (No. 11 in A major, K. 331)

Thanks @pianistavt. Unfortunately I don't have music teacher I wish I had. Actually by the time you responded I wanted to try Schubert Serenade a mess with it a bit and I think I did pretty good job at the first page of the sheet I made very good progress imo and I choose an easier arrangement https://s9.imslp.org/files/imglnks/usimg/2/23/IMSLP24143-PMLP02204-Franz_Schubert_-_Schwanengesang_(transcr._Horn).pdf

I am not sure why you considered the piece to be hard, maybe the arrangement is much easier or you misassessed me as I didn't provide enough details on my experience - Sorry for that -

And you were absolutely right I loved Mozart Sonata No.11, 1st, 3rd movement and I will give the 2nd movement another try maybe I like it.

I think the reason it's good to do the Mozart first is because Mozart offers a really good foundation as a pianist. Sure, much of his stuff isn't too technically difficult, but it demands a very polished interpretation despite myths about his music being too happy or youthful.

The Serenade should not be too difficult, but it is also really similar to the Chopin and you would benefit from some variety. Try it out if you want something to work on the side of the Mozart, but remember that you can get a really valuable lesson from Mozart. I was never very good at practicing Mozart and it's biting right now with more difficult pieces.

I just assumed that, because it was Liszt, it would get very technical. I looked at it - agreed, not difficult.

Glad to hear it.

I recommend you play all composers equally at the beginning. A lot of self-taught pianists just focus on Chopin and Liszt. Try to find pieces by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Debussy and Bartok that you like.

Because I am not a music student, I study computer science and I play piano as hoppy so music until now is not that serious for me. Thank you for your responses I will take a look into Mozart Sonata 11 and maybe Sonata 16 next.

Yeah I think I notice the simplicity and clarity in his music I absolutely love Mozart Thanks for the reply.
