I vastly prefer the concerto in F minor over the concerto in E minor. I think it's a much better constructed work. The E minor I find to be overrated and too bloated even if there are many individually beautiful ideas in it.
I prefer #1 over #2 but the 2nd mvt of #2 is gorgeous. However, so is the 2nd mvt of No 1 but in a different way. I read that the no. 1 is played 9 to 1 over no 2 at the International Chopin Piano Competition held in Warsaw. Not sure if this is true. Assuming it is true, I wonder why this is the case. Could it be that the performer prefers #1 musically or technically? Or maybe they think the judges prefer No.1? I did quick check looking at the last 5 Chopin competitions (Bruce Liu, Seong-Jin Cho, Avdeeva, Blechacz, Yundi Li). It looks like the last 5 Chopin competition winners all played number 1.
I read on the website of the chopin competition that the first is easier technically. I have noticed the phenomenon as well, I find it kind of a shame, because I prefer the first movement of the f minor a ton over the first movement of the e Minor, but vice versa for the third movements.
