Big Jumps - While Site Reading!?
on: May 10, 2024, 07:19:24 PM
I'm trying to play a ragtime piece and it has these jumps on the left hand. It's Snow Mountain from Mario here is a link it is great. This pianist is great too.

How do you site read, and keep your eyes on the music, while doing these big jumps? Or when it comes to big jumps, do you take your eyes off the music for a second to spot the key for your finger, then put your eyes back on the paper after?

I suspect that he has most of the key locations in his brain from years of practice, so he can let muscle memory do the job while he reads the sheet music.

If those were random jumps, it would be next to impossible. But this is a very common stride pattern. Play it 10000 times, and maybe it'll be committed to memory without having to look at the keys.

What the other's said, you build up an intuition for where things are on the keyboard without looking as you keep practicing. It'll just take time, don't worry about it :)
