Albeniz El Albaicin fingering problem
on: May 13, 2024, 11:18:15 AM
I'm revisiting this piece after a few years and I'm struggling to find a satisfactory fingering for the circled part.
My edition recommends 21-121 but I originally used 12341 because it made more sense to keep thumbs on white notes like in the Gb major scale. But coming back with a fresh pair of eyes I find stretching Gb-Eb with 3-4 spoils the fluidity. (Just realised the key signature isn't in the image- it's 5 flats)
Any ideas?

A) 3-4 on Gb-Eb would be the default approach
x) take the fluidity issue as a challenge to work on?
y) the fluidity issue may be detectable to your ears only, at tempo
B) personally I have no qualms passing the thumb under from a black key to a black key, I think it's important skill to have for 20th century advanced music, can't remember where I applied it, but I know I have. Ab-Gb would be 2-1

My vote would be for the following, starting with the first circled Ab...
2-1-2-4-3-1-2-3-4-1-5

I never thought of passing the thumb under. I tried it out and it's doable! I'm going to try alternating the two options (my original fingering + the 2-1 suggestion) for a few days and see which I prefer.

another idea, which I think I like this the best
(assuming the key of Gb)
starting with Gb at the beginning, going to the Db in the next measure:
4-3-2-1 4-3-2-1 2-4 2-4
