Favorite Early Chopin?
on: May 23, 2024, 01:15:42 AM
I'm mostly just asking because I love the Rondo à la Mazur, which shows his great development on this dance form in my opinion. It shows a sporadic nature that I enjoy most about Chopin, and Schumann really was right, this piece translates to Chopin's take on how he could maintain interest in music despite mostly being famous for (excessive) melancholy.

Honorable mention to the C Minor sonata! The polyphony and density as well as refusing to modulate the development just really interest me.

I stopped at Op. 8 because the Op. 9 Nocturnes and Op. 10 Etudes are so well known.
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

Well, that's a little annoying, but understandable. I'm a huge fan of his first Concerto, op. 11. :(
I voted for the Sonata because I really like that one as well.

I feel like Chopin had easily the best early pieces of any Romantic-era composer, BTW. I was thinking of doing a "favorite (not famous) Chopin piece" thread sooner or later lol. :)

The Op. 11 Concerto is also really popular.

I also love early Brahms. For some reason his Op. 1 piano sonata is one of my favorite Brahms piano pieces (right behind Op. 119 and Op. 79).

Really? I don't see people talk about it much, even on the forums. It's usually overshadowed by Liszt's and Rachmaninoff's.

From what I've read, that used to be an extremely unpopular opinion on here. Something about "getting inspired by Schumann ruined his early pieces." ::)

It's the most played Concerto in the Chopin Competition (out of the two lol). And I heard it on the radio before, that must mean something. (A station that basically just sticks to Rachmaninoff Concerti, Haydn Symphonies, and the like).

That's got to be all the Schumann haters on this forum, then. I've yet to delve into the several obscure composers that thalbergmad recommended.

I've started listening to Sorabji just because thalbergmad acts like a child whenever he's brought up. I bet he's never given Concerto da suonare da me solo e senza orchestra, per divertirmi a listen. ;)

P.S. That last part was a joke; just grabbed a random Sorabji piece with a complex name from wikipedia.
I've only been listening to the (fairly) well-known stuff like Clavicembalisticum.

Great idea for a post, I have to admit I've heard only a few of these in their entirety, what I've heard of the c minor sonata, I like a lot.  I forgot Chopin wrote a piano trio - why don't we hear more about it?  His only chamber work, besides the cello sonata, which is a late work.
