6 to 8 mins long pieces for competition
on: May 27, 2024, 06:58:38 PM
Hello everyone, I want to get some inspirations for a 6 to 8 minutes long piece from classical epoch. It is for an all-instrument competition. Thank you in advance!

Well, I believe you chose the right instrument. ;)
If you're allowed to feature multiple instruments, you could do a movement from a concerto. Perhaps Liszt or Chopin (not saying one of the Rach concertos because you asked for classical).
However, I do have the same question as lelle. What do mean by the "classical epoch"?

I'm a bit confused by the wording of your question, but I'm assuming you mean a solo piano piece from the classical period. If you are allowed a particular sonata movement, it is a much easier choice, but otherwise, I can think of Beethoven's WoO 77 or Op. 76 variations. There's the Hob. XVI/51 sonata for a complete sonata or Beethoven's Op. 49 if you're leaning on the easier side. If the time constraint isn't hard, I really love Mozart's K 511 rondo too but it might not fit into the intended mood. If sonata movements are allowed, there's Mozart's virtually unknown K 400 sonata movement, the last movement of K 533 or K 333, or K 330, or virtually any Beethoven 1st or last movement. I guess you could also check out a Clementi sonatina. There are lots of options and I don't really get your wording, but this website gives a general idea: https://www.pianolibrary.org/ Also, this all depends on how fast you play the piece, and (this is especially important for Classical), whether you choose to play through all repeats.
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

Beethoven Fur Elise or Mozart Alla Turca  :)

Just joking.

Is a movement of a classical sonata allowed? Or it must be a complete work?

6-8 minutes...... Are repeats in the work allowed or not allowed?
