Depressing music
on: June 20, 2024, 12:09:43 PM
I have composed a piece of music which my friend thought was very depressing now I have a genuine question and I'd like people to answer why do composers make depressing music such as chopin's funeral march when I looked it up the music was described on the internet as being quite depressing why do composers compose such music don't they prefer to compose happy sounding music what do they get from making such music that people think I don't like this it's too depressing

The meaning of "depressing" is subjective in music. You said yourself that you just unwittingly write a piece which someone else thought was depressing, so you already have your answer.
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

Hard to say whether a piece is depressing or not
Depending on the person, Scarlatti’s Sonata in F Minor can be either mind numbingly depressing or very soothing
Really depends on the mood to be honest
Amateur pianist and composer(will show works soon)

I think that composers write sad music to express sadness, and that's a good thing. If you are in a sad or difficult situation it's often comforting to see that a poet or composer has felt something similar and expressed it beautifully. Sad music can be extremely cathartic.

Look up catharsis.

Imagine a movie that had only happy scenes. It would be a true bore to watch.
