I didn't even know it had five versions! I have to say, the transcendental etude version is my favorite.

It really is insane how much Liszt seemed to like the idea of making "Mazeppa" a piece.
La Campanella is the other Liszt etude with five versions, and even that is a stretch. (In order to get 5 for La Campanella, you have to count La Clochette, as well as both versions of S. 700.)

On the topic of highly revised works, Bruckner was known to revise his symphonies many times because he was worried about many small issues that had hefty workarounds. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versions_and_editions_of_Bruckner%27s_symphonies
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

What are the 5 versions?
I listed them in the poll:
S. 100 Symphonic Etudes no. 6 (far-removed from the other four, but still a "Mazeppa")
S. 136 Etude en Douze Exercise no. 4 (Liszt's first --and easiest-- version of Mazeppa, written while he was still a teenager)
S. 137 Douze Grande Etudes no. 4 (the second version of the Etude, written in 1837)
S. 138 (a revision of the S. 137 version)
S. 139 Transcendental Etudes no. 4 (the most famous version)
