Help with Poulenc Nocturne
on: October 02, 2024, 02:49:45 AM
Hi
Can someone clarify for me how to play the section in Poulenc's nocturne in C major with 3 staves. There's a part where it's impossible to play all the notes written in the beat 1 chords. Please see attachment pic - bottom line of the page. Also it directs to play the top treble stave with the LH but I've seen performers use the right and use the left to play the middle stave - I'd love some suggestions please.

I love this piece. I'm guessing the chord on the first beat is a hand size issue, you can just spread it.

For the top stave, it's easier to play as written because you're keeping the RH stable and it's just the LH that's doing the moving. You could play the first two quavers of the middle stave with RH and take the rest with LH but this makes it harder because both hands have to jump around.

Thanks so much.
The major issue was the chords on the 1st beat in the 2nd and 4th bars of the bottom bass line. How can they be played while playing the top stave as well?

They're tied over from the 1st and 3rd bars, so you don't have to play them.

To clarify, the ties indicate that they're to be held with the pedal.

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
