Scriabin - difficulty, order
on: November 07, 2024, 03:14:59 PM
What pieces by Scriabin have you played and what was the basis for your selection?

I'm interested in starting a Scriabin deep dive, haven't played much.  I'd be curious to hear a suggested possible order to take through all the preludes and etudes, and other short pieces.  Or simply what pieces you've enjoyed working on.  Have to admit, as I've dabbled in Scriabin, the learning curve is much steeper than Chopin, for example.

Some pieces I've identified to play are:
some preludes from op 11, not sure which ones other than the first
the two poemes - how difficult?
the famous etude op 8 no 12 in d# minor
etude op 42 no 7 in f minor
the sonata no 2 first mvmt (how hard is the second mvmt?)

Here is one subjective difficulty ranking:

I find the pianolibrary info very helpful for composers represented there. Recommended edition lists are incomplete though (most likely nobody keeps them updated), at least for some composers, but still very helpful.

Few of his pieces are "easy". I love the 2nd sonata, and first movement is not too bad. 2nd movement is hard if your technique is not ready.

A good piece of advice my teacher gave me ( i had already performed 4th sonata at this point), "you should have started with the second sonata, once you play that you gain a  understanding of scriabin, it makes learning other pieces by him much easier because  you can recognise where it comes from.

From the pieces you listed, i’ve only played etude 8-12, quite hard, but not as hard as etude 42-5, this one is technically very challenging, but if you have a strong technique it would be quite easy.

And the other thing I played is the fantaisie, for me both technically and musically nightmare.
