pieces to help with voicing
on: November 12, 2024, 02:57:59 AM
I've been learning the Opus 48 no 1 Chopin nocturne, although I suspect it's somewhat beyond my level, and predictably I'm not having too much trouble with most of it except for the doppio movimento section. I can get the notes under my fingers but the voicing is really, really terrible. I can figure out which notes to emphasize, but I'm struggling to do that while keeping the overall volume low and the rhythm consistent.
Are there any pieces you would recommend to pick up some technique? I'd like to do this piece justice. I learned the Op 10 no 3 etude a while ago and found it pretty helpful for this; anything along those lines would be useful.

I like number 41 of J.B. Cramer's 84 etudes for this purpose. It's not very difficult to get your fingers around, but there's a lot of room for practicing the voicing of the top line in the RH.

I like the Air from Grieg's Holberg Suite. Not terribly hard notes, but there are lots of places where you have to think about voicing - voicing the melody in the bass or against arpeggiated chords, voicing repeated chords to decide which notes to bring out, how to vary that depending on the harmonies. It's fun to work on.

Anything by Bach where you have to have multiple voices in one hand is good. Typically that would be fugues but many other things also qualify.
You could add the Etude Op. 10 no 6 and Op 25 no. 7 as they deal with similar problems as Op. 10 no. 3.
