Pedaling for Liszt's La Campanella
on: March 10, 2025, 10:02:47 PM
Any recommendations for people who have performed this piece? I've been working on it for a long time now, and I'm trying to make it as artistic and beautiful as I can. In my mind, I want to use as little pedal as possible, to bring out the staccato bell-like sounds, but at the same time I want to make it lyrical, smooth, and sort of "floating" in some passages. Too much pedal drowns out the crispness and makes you look lazy.

My usual pedaling is to emphasize the first and fourth beat of the main theme. I'm really only using it to emphasize the main notes in the passages. However, with the trills I think you can start applying the pedal more heavily, as the notes become less jumpy and more "floating." With the octave section I start off using pedal somewhat sparingly and then by the end I'm using it very liberally, especially in the coda.

Think of how you want the different parts to sound, then pedal with your ear depending on the room or hall you are playing in. Are there any spots you are unsure about the pedalling?
