Suitable as a concerto
on: April 20, 2003, 01:30:34 AM
I've been thinking this for quite a while....This is one of my favorite piece but i sort of think the music is 'concerto' music. Especially with those big chords, i strongly felt that an orchestra should back it up... So i have had this urge to transcribe it for piano and orchestra.
What do you think?
Ps. i have never played it

That's something that Ken Russell might have done in his extravaganza film on the life of Franz Liszt, "Lisztomania".
Today I listened to a recording of the Liszt B minor sonata played by Maurizio Pollini and what a stunning performance it was!
It is a most eloquent, passionate work and it was conceived for solo piano which is its perfect medium of expression. The work's tonal and harmonic colours are gloriously pianistic and to add an orchestral part would simply be a case of more is less and less is more.
Thank you,
Robert.

Whats this film? I'm very interested.
Yes, well as you might already know, everyone who comments on his piano compostion all seem to agree that his piano writing can only be described as orchestral.
The whole orchestra is in them. So with such a huge work as the Sonata, i feel its needs more than just the piano. Its too big just for piano. I think that no matter how great this work is, it still can be greater.
