Finger weights... anyone used them?
on: March 02, 2005, 08:44:59 PM
Hey there,

I was reading about a (new-ish?) product called FingerWeights.
I was wondering if anybody here uses or has used them in the past?
they claim to speed up playing and accuracy, which i think may have some truth in it but i was looking for an independant opinion...

could anybody shine a light on this one for me?

much appreciated!

This sounds so dangerous to me.  I always think of Schumann when someone starts talking about strengthening the fingers with weights or some device.

I think this is dubious.  Playing the piano requires very little actual muscle power, IMO, and almost none of that comes from the fingers.

They don't.

It doesn't.

When I was doing intense ear training, I put weights on my ear lobes. I now have perfect pitch, and can hear a pin drop from the other side of the room.

You got to be very careful with this method. I misjudged the correct weights. As a consequence, my hearing is a half-note off. Very annoying.

the hands in the pictures are wearing the weights on the knuckles.. I cant imagine this doing anything positive for technique.

They were very fashionable at the turn of the century but numerous folks Schumann most notably wrecked their hands as a reslut of them. As a general rule of thumb (forgive the pun) if anything causes you to fatigue or be in discomfort when you play it is BADDDD!!!!!!! :o

I am developing a system of exercises to strengthen the arms and shoulders that if used properly and consistently over a period of time will allow people to fly by flapping their arms vigorously. Anyone interested? ;)

"I misjudged the correct weights. As a consequence, my hearing is a half-note off."

Now you have to sing soprano in your church choir...
