I have just started working on Schubert Impromptu Op. 90 no 4. I was wondering if anyone has any insight or advice on how to get the right hand light enough like the recordings. It would also be helpful to hear how you approached learning this piece.
I've been working on 90/4 for about a month. I worked on those right hand broken chords first as blok chords to learn the notes. Then I broke them into overlapping 5 note groups [e.g. Cb(2)-Eb(4)-Cb(2)-Ab(1)-Ab(3) pause Ab(3)-Cb(5)-Ab(3)-Eb(1)-Eb(2) pause, and so on]. I worked on these to get them as fast and even as possible - the hardest bit is getting the repeated notes at the end of each group to sound cleanly at high speed. Then I stitched the overlapping groups together until I have each descending pattern intact. Then I alternate between practicing very fast and very slow. I tried practicing with dotted rhythms (which, for me, helps smooth out rapid scales), but that did not seem to help much.
It's a great piece and lots of fun to work on.
