Yoyr favourite chopin-performer?
on: March 08, 2005, 07:27:59 AM
Hi again,

I just wondered: Which pianist do you think plays chopin in the best way? Personally I rate Zimmerman and Argerich on top. They play every chopin-piece so marvellous followed by Perrahia(the etudes), Pogorelich (the preludes) and Pollini(the scherzos).
Not to forget Walter Hautzig (have you ever heard of him). He always lived in the shaddows of Rubinstein and Horowith (they play Chopin quite well as well). But you just listen to his first recordings! (he recorded over 100 cds (americus)). He also was my teachers teacher at the peabody institute many years ago! Hehe, no advertising... I'll be back with a BIG report after my concert april 1....

See you all,

Hauk

To me, it differs a lot depending on what genre you pick.
From the top of my head: Zimmerman for the Ballades, Barenboim for the Nocturnes, Argerich for the Piano Concertos, Pollini for the etudes, Zoltan Kocsis for the Preludes and he also playes the Waltzes pretty well.

Rubinstein and Horowith (they play Chopin quite well as well).

No way.

Ballades- can't agree with anyone but myself  ;D
Etudes- Perahia, for sure
Preludes- Bolet, you may be surprised
Scherzi- I must say I like Yundi Li, every now and then, otherwise- Rubinstein

Otherwise, Rubinstein or Cortot pretty much.

Ashkenazy, for almost everything.

I don't like perahia's etudes. He plays etude 10/8 quite bad. I don't like Pollini's etudes either. He plays them way to fast.

One more point for Zimmerman from me. I just love the way he plays the Waltzes.

The studio recording of the Khachaturian, strangely enough.

Yeah, I rate Zimerman close to the top, and I also spell his name correctly .......  :P

Hm.  If I really had to pick just one for everything, I'd have to say Rubenstein.  that would be my "safe" answer. I am also really enjoying Ashkenazy's versions of the ballades, althouhg my teacher would gripe that he plays the opening sections of the g minor ballade too slowly.  She likes it faster and more "perky".  I personally like Ashkenazy's dark, slow start.  We are after all talking about gut wrenching tragedy here.

I alsio like Krystian Zimerman's versions, and I can see I need to check out the argerich!

I like Sokolov.

Idil Biret is good too. But her music doesn't really hit a snare in me. But I can hear its good. Other people will probably love it.

Rubenstein is nice too.

I am not sure about Ashkenazy or Pollini. I don't like Cziffra.

I guess Argerich will be ok.

I too enjoy Ashkenazy's slower rendition of the opening of the g minor ballade, although I wish he colored it with a sense of being on the brink of losing his mind though.

Rubinstein, Cortot and Cziffra are consistently excellent in their Chopin.
However, I have recently discovered Richter's Chopin recordings and find them astounding, but then again it is Richter.

There is also some marvellous footage about of Richter playing some of Etudes, which leaves you in a daze.
Does anyone else here think the opening of Liszt's 'Orage' (AdP - Suisse No.5) sounds like the Gymnopedie from Hell?

jacques thibeaux (i hope that's the spelling).  he plays on a broadwood piano in one of his recordings.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

Rubenstein would be my favorite-- I used to listen to his Chopin recordings "to death" years ago.  However . . . .  I will admit that I am somewhat dated and have not been following contemporary pianists very closely.

I just listened to a Chopin CD by Claude Arrau and thought he did a fine job.

Regards--

Janusz Olejniczak  ...and Rubenstein  :D

Some pianists can butcher Chopin, but I think Olejniczak does a great job interpretting it!  imho ;)

there are heaps of good chopin performers...
just depends on which piece they play really...
in some... Argerich is great, in some Yundi Li, in some Claudio Arrau etc. etc.
but... overall... i should say that i like the overall Chopin performance of Ashkenazy...
*^^*  :)
