Theoretical discussion/Analysis Board?
on: March 08, 2005, 06:00:24 PM
I am very interested in and wondering if it would be possible (and if there would be any interest) in creating a board (or whatever it is called) dedicated specifically to theoretical discussion in general as well as analysis of specific pieces?

(This could also help with organization of posts/topics to a degree and could become a fabulous resource for people)

Hey, I found this (feeling a little guilty about posting a link to another forum here... but it seems kinda cool though it could use some spicing up imho)

I wouldn't mind a board dedicated to theory at all.

I also agree.  I could use help with the theoretical aspects of music and I have seen questions floating around almost every board but it is difficult for me to follow and put it all together, without the organization that a seperate board could offer.

Great suggestion, m1469.

I think that would be very useful.

If you build it, they will come  ;D

But seriously, they(I) will  ;D, I have lots of questions that I don't ask because there is not a proper place for them.  I know, it's silly, but oh so true.  Plus, we could do other projects, strictly theory related.

Just ask them anyway.  Put them under Repertoire or Misc.

I just wonder about my time for really being able to get into something.

Just ask them anyway.  Put them under Repertoire or Misc.

I have in the past, and so have other people.  One of the problems with that is that the Misc board does not get viewed as frequently as the others, so those questions might get over looked.  Also, the other major problem as to why I don't just post them anyway, is because my brain simply won't let me without there being a spot for them  :-[.

If there were a separate board, I think it would allow for more focus and therefore more personal growth.

Every topic in need of being focused on, is best grasped in the appropriate environment.   :)

Just create an "index" to keep track of them all.  A thread that tracks them.  That would keep them all in one place.  Could be a sticky.

I have seen a forum that has far too many differnt boards.  No one goes in some of them and they get stale.  Not that an analysis board isn't a good idea.  Maybe there needs to be a large number of analyses for Nils to put one up.

No  :)

At least not for all of the questions that have ever been asked on the forum thus far.   They are scattered throughout the forum, and anyway, those won't breed more questions.  And, that latter part is what I am after, a place that actually invites the focus and helps more questions come to the forefront.  Maybe a special thread would help, but I don't want to have to constantly keep it updated with more links to other places on the forum that people *may* be asking about, just to maintain some organization.  Plus, a single thread just does not fulfill the vision... it's simply not the same as a separate board.

Theory is a big subject, and it can handle a separate board.

Now, bear in mind that I am simply responding to what people are continuing to post in this thread... I am not trying to be too pushy  ;)

he he... well, I know that now all you are trying to get me to do is explain myself even though you do understand.  In any event, No, I do not create a thread for all of the questions asked regarding theory.

However, the most important thing is that I win, thanks for playing and we have a complementary gift for you  ;D

I see the point would be for ease of organization.

And you didn't win m1469.  I did. :D   I unchecked the "lose" option in the menu, so that means I have to win.  I have a special certificate here that shows I win too.

Well, my 2 cents are hiding here:
https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,17165.msg183881.html#msg183881

There have been suggestions for creating new boards for composing, music theory, analysis and history which are all very good ideas. You will probably see some new boards here within a few months.

BTW, what do you think about putting the analysis/history board as a sub-board of the Repertoire section and the Music Theory as a sub-board of Students Corner?

Well, for what it's worth, my original opinion is still exaclty where I stand on this matter.  At least as far as the fact that I don't exaclty know what is a "sub-board"... (?).  If it is just something that goes into the little descriptions of each board, how will that be any different than it already is ?  Other than declaring that the student's corner is about one more thing ?  It still doesn't seem to provide any more organization for threoretical matters, than what already exists (which is currently next to nothing).

Subboard would be hard to get to.  I would keep them all out in front.

People are free to post any of this now.  If one board was getting a ton of theory or history threads, then it would make sense to create a new board, but I don't see that happening.  Keep it simple.

I'm still in favor of a button to put all the threads on one mass list, and one to show all messages from the past day (which you can do with the search function but it's a little work).

Bob, as I have said before, having an actual place for it would encourage more activity.  I, for one, would dwell in the theory board  A LOT (probably more than any other board). As it is now,  I know that anything I would post about theory will quickly get lost, so I don't post anything ... though, I have many things I would like to discuss and projects I would like to work on.

Besides that, people *are* posting about theory already.  There are several different topics that are current, spread between the existing boards... the fact that you seem unaware of this just goes to show that it is not obvious enough posting them between boards like misc, studetn's corner, and all others.

We just keep having the same conversations about this for how long now ?  This and the whole idea of the "index" are merely "carrots at the end of the stick"... *tired of it*.

Well maybe.  Ok.

Maybe it could be tried.  A test.

Maybe there's a way to do a temporary theme board, like a Mozart board for a month.

m1469, a sub-board would be a separate board but with the only difference that it is not visable on the main page. Instead the sub-board(s) will be listed above all the topics of the  board it is sorted under.

I think it is a good idea to start with creating a new Music Theory board sub-board and then evaluate the results after a couple of months. If it appears to be positive we can keep it and maybe think about setting up other new boards such as composition etc.

Since only about 10% of the topics in the Student's Corner is about theory I do not think this will be a problem. Anyway, it can easily be moved to a separate board later on.
