what are the best piano pieces by these composeres??

i never heared of any music by hyden but after listening to his cello concertos i became very intrested in his other works

and i never listened to any piano music my schumann exept the piano concerto and some symphonic etudes ( which i didn't like that much maybe i should listen to them more) but i just listened to his chopin and chiarina from carnaval and i'd have to say that those pieces are one of the most touching pieces i have ever heared.

My favourite piano music by Schumann is his 'Scenes from the childhood' (Kinderszenen). There are other beautiful pieces, but this is by far my favourite...

Haydn wrote some very nice piano sonatas. It is a shame that they aren't played more. People tend to say that they are worthless. I don't see it that way.

I own a CD by Emanuel AX playing some of the Haydn piano sonatas (i beleive he wrote more than 50).

It is really very good. The selected sonatas are beautiful, and the interpretation is excellent.

Yeah, it's interesting about Haydn that he gets played by younger students all the time, then strictly left alone except by the top-tier players who play him again when they're quite a bit older.  So I think there's something to it that attracts people after they've played all the bombast out there.  I really like Haydn because he was sort of a maverick.  He was left to his own devices in a castle in the forest all those years and had to come up with his own ideas.  Schumann I like in general, and love some of-- especially the songs and one of the sonatas-- but since he was, shall we say unwell much of the time, I think the writing's a little uneven.  Or I just might not get it until I'm older.

No. 62 in E flat Major, Hob. XVI/52

I can't speak enough of No. 50, 53, 59, 60 and 62!!!

Also check out the F Minor Variations and the D Major Concerto, they are great!

My favorite work by Schumann is undoubtedly the Symphonic Etudes. Listen to Richter or Myra Hess for these. Also worth looking at- Kinderszenen, Kreisleriana, Waldszenen, Opus 17 Fantasy, Carnaval, Abegg-Variations and his piano concerto

the Haydn sonatas rock. in writing these he was influenced by most of all by c.p.e. bach, another overlooked composer. I have listened to many of the sonatas and have liked them all, but the only cd I own is one on Naxos with #'s 42-47 (Hob. XVI 27-32), but I really love them. I don't really know that much about old Haydn though, so I can't offer any enlightening comments (which isn't unusual)

If this will help, Alfred Brendel will be in Seattle this weekend, and he has Haydn sonata in C major #48? on his program - so it's not just the youngsters!  I am looking forward to hearing this one done well!

I remember reading Russell Sherman's insightful book 'Piano Pieces' some years ago. He raved about Haydn as a master sonata composer and how he is often neglected in favour of Mozart or Beethoven. At the time, I figured Mozart and Beethoven would be the ones to aspire to. Perhaps professionals feel that Haydn is only good for educational purposes, which is why they only come back to him later in their careers.

Now I see what Sherman was getting at. I've been working on the sonata in E-flat Major (no. 59) for some months and find it endlessly fascinating. I wanted to learn it first for the beautiful second movement (which reminds me a little of the slow movement of  Mozart's piano concerto k.488). But it turned out that the first movement was the one that really hooked me. Perfectly logical, yet full of surprises. It even has a section of Bach-style counterpoint. Lovely stuff.

I really do love Schumann's stuff- his best works tend to be his shorter ones, however. I've heard him described as "the most romantic of the romantic composers."

Also- if anyone has any knowledge on the subject- did Schumann say anything about his feelings toward "Eusubias and Floristan" (pardon my spelling)? I would think that it would have been terribly frightening, but I'm interested in knowing how he felt.

People don't like it because it's "happy" music. It's true- I've heard lots of people say euw haydn, his stuff is too happy for my taste..

My favourite Schumann is the Phantasiestuck op. 12. It's some of the most accessible Schumann in my opinion. Also check out the sonatas.
