The Quiet Revolutionary of the Piano – Fauré’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

In the pantheon of French music, Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) often seems a paradox—an innovator cloaked in restraint, a Romantic by birth who shaped the contours of modern French music with quiet insistence. Piano Street now provides sheet music for his complete piano works: a body of music that resists spectacle, even as it brims with invention and brilliance. Read more

Piano in college (as a minor)???
on: March 11, 2005, 12:50:47 AM
I was thinking about having a minor in piano (study piano) when I get to college.  The problem is I have only been playing for 2 years.  I have made very good progress but I am soon going to move on to another teacher with hopes that I will be able to attain this dream.  At the moment I am playing J.S Bach invention number and 6 ....Do you think it will be possible for me to minor in piano?

The requirements are as follows:
A.  An accumulation of 5 or more years of serious piano study is expected as a prerequisite.

B.  Memorization is expected and the student will be expected to sight-read. [ :-[ :-X]

C.  A minimum of three pieces should be prepared from the following:

1.  Prelude, Fugue, or Invention by J.S. Bach

2.  Classical sonata
[I was thinking maybe something by Haydn or Schubert]

3.  A work from the romantic or contemporary period such as a waltz, prelude, or etude

4.  Major & minor scales and arpeggios

5.  Hymn or contemporary arrangement of median difficulty

Do you have any suggestions??  Advice?
Thanks  in advance.

It's like a major, only it's smaller... and it's not the main concentration.  For instance I could major in Chemistry, and minor in piano.  Although piano would not be my main concentration I would still study it.

I think you should clarify what kind of suggestions you're after. Pieces to learn for the audition? Whether or not to carry through? Methods?

I haven't heard of any school that offers a piano minor program specifically (though it is possible to take lessons to satisfy your minor requirements.) At my school, only music majors have an option to choose their areas of concentration like composition, performance...etc.  what's frustrating about my school's music department is that music majors get a preferential treatment. When I auditioned for a lesson class a while ago, I played 1st mvt of Bach's Italian Concerto, Liszt's Transcendental Etude No. 10, and Ravel's Jeux d'eau. I thought I did reasonably well, but of course I didn't get in. >:( It really depends on the number of peoples auditioning, and the the department's budget. If you really want to pursue playing piano seriously, I recommend you to double major in music.
