Free Sheet Music site
on: March 16, 2005, 12:28:51 PM
I found this site https://www.sheetmusicarchive.net/index.cfm

You can download max of 2 per day.

I also went to another site Free-Sheet music.com (or something) but when I clicked on sheet music I ended up at another site where you definately buy it.  I thought that the 2 were linked.  So I contacted them and said where is the "Free" sheet music.  Anyway in their reply they said the following:

We are a retailer.  Free sheet music does not exist on the web except for public domain material like Bach and Beethoven pieces etc.  All sheet music is copyrighted and it's illegal to share it for free.  Unless the site owner wants to go to prison and face large fines.

Now Im confused.  Are public domain sites legal or not.  The only restriction I see on the site I gave at the top was that its illegal to download music after 1923 outside the US.   Anybody have advise?  Im in the UK

Here's another great site, but it's in Russian:

https://www.piano.ru/inter.html

If you look at the url's in the status bar you can see which link goes to which composer.

Yeah also you can delete your cookies in control panel internet options if you are at work.  Is it legal?

Copyright within the EU exists for 70 years after the author/composers death, providing they were an EU national.
I went googling and found that. The email was probably referring to more modern music, where the copyright is still valid. Stuff in the public domain is fair game, I believe.
Incidentally, that reply you got was bloody rude!

The russian site is great.  The liszt hr's are from the Liszt budapest edition.  I wonder though if this site is legal because they just look scanned in.  Most sites seem to do their own version of the version (taking copyright off etc and making it look like they've produced it themselves.

There are also some music post 1923 (Poulenc 1966 etc).  Whats the score on this?

As mentioned on the site, they have public domain editions, so all the sheet music on that site are published before 1955, and therefore it is legal to download it. However, as a result, many of them are non-Urtext editions, so you'll find wrong notes and dynamics in Bach etc., but their Debussy is pretty reliable.

Another site is https://muslib.mmv.ru/index_eng.html but he hasn't got such a wide selection as the SMA, but his editions are much more reliable (and are probably illegal to print).

Now, these are all sites that I have been given links to, collected on my own or have found in various places here on the forum.  I have decided to put them all together here.  I have not organized them particularly, but I have placed the top 4 that I use the most in the top 4 slots below the comprehensive guides.  I will be revising this and giving descriptions as time plods along (just like my imaginary horse, he he).

hmmmm, No, I don't think he would unless he saw actually.   I only grabbed links off of threads : (*covers ears with hands and sings loudly* la la la... I'm not listening)

I am happy to take them down but they are up within those threads anyway (are people not supposed to be able to find those???).  Consider it done.

no no no Im sure it's fine.. Why dont you go ahead and post them, but send Joel a private message asking if it's alright to spread around the link.  If it were my music, I would like to be in control of who is accessing my music and for what reason.  also, he might have a maximum bandwidth, so only a certain number of downloads are allowed in a given time.

It's kind of like these crazy house parties that get out of hand.  The owner of the house invites over 5 friends for a party, but what he isnt aware of is how each of his friends invite 5 other friends without his permission.  These friends of his friends talk about the party to, say, 10 acquaintances, who happen to know members of some malicious gang, who eventually hear about this party going on.  Anyway, on party night, there are over a hundred people there, the owner is too timid or scared to turn away the gang members, so he ends up being forced into letting them all in.  Pretty soon, the walls are all pissed up and the carpets are full of vomit, while the gang members set fire to the owner's music collection and store drugs  under his doormat for the police to find...

Lets just make sure Joel isnt the poor house owner of this situation..  Multitudes of people will be attracted to this thread, titled "free sheetmusic site", and if Joel doesnt know about this thread, he will be wondering why millions of people show up on party night, that is, why his bandwidth is all ran out etc..

He he.. well, this talk about bandwidth and stuff is something that I really don't understand and I am certain there is more to how it works with posting music like that than what I know about.  For some reason I am too shy to message Joel  :-[ ... so I think I will just sit this "party" out.  I don't feel like being in some middle of this, especially since I was only trying to compile links that were already on the forum for the sake of other people  ::).

Oh m1469,
haha I should have mentioned before..  About that post where you gave the threads where Joel's links are:

By doing this ("grabbing links off other threads"), you are still telling the gangmembers about the party - you may not be directly showing them where the house is, but instead you draw them a map so they can easily seek it out themselves!
hehe...such a trouble maker, m1469  ;D

Im sure Joel will come along some time and tell me to shut up, and you to go ahead and post the links, but I only bring this up because I respect Joel so much and he has helped me out countless times.  Perhaps if he finds out that if people like you or me who he has helped are spreading around his music without him knowing about it, maybe in the future he wont want to help anyone.... and that's perfectly understandable. Meanwhile, we are perfectly screwed because now, we cant get sheetmusic for Tausig's Ghostship..

eMule is the best source for sheet music IMO. There's a collection of 408 different composers (some jazz) with only piano sheet music. There are also updates availabe, like bach has vol10, 10a, 10b, 10c and 10d. It's really much sheet music.

I'd like to add a note to mayla's very extensive post. the 2nd site of that post (free-score.com) also host free sheet music & not only links to other website but it's access is a bit ambiguous , once you get on the site click on free scores on the top left & you'll get on a page with 2 list of instruments , the 1st one is a big list & will link you to other sites that offer partitions but you want to go to the 2nd list under "free sheet music to download" to get to the partitions of that site & i like this website personally (861 free pieces & doesn't have either of the 2 bane of free sheet music websites which are registering & limited amount of download per day)
