Antonio Carlos Jobim
on: March 16, 2005, 11:26:16 PM
Hello Everyone

You may have noticed the other thread i have made which is in the Student Room about Gershwin's 3 Preludes. I am planning on performing them in a concert in three months. As the subject suggests i am also thinking about doing Antonio Carlos Jobim as his music moves me very much. The two pieces i am really thinking about are The Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado.

I need information about:-
The best arrangements to get, i would prefer the most complicated arrangements rather than simplified.
I have heard a Midi that is a medley of the two pieces i have mentioned, has anyone heard of the combination?

If they will be good for the concert that i have already stated., alongside Gershwin.

Difficulty.....and any other considerations.

Thanks Everyone

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. (Hunter Thompson)

I have actually seen him live (he died a few years ago) in Brazil (my wife is Brazilian). But I will be truthful here: I do not particularly like his music (or Bossa Nova for that matter). I guess I heard too much of it, and now it is too much of a sameness to me. my three favourite brazilian (popular) composers are Egberto Gismonti (he is quite amazing - if you want some difficult impressive stuff try him - unfortunately I am not sure there is any sheet music available that does him justice - he is a usperb imporviser), Hermetho Paschoal and Wagner Tiso. They are all a cross between jazz, brazilian folk music and classical music (Gismonti was trained as a classical pianist). Again, the problem is finding sheet music that does them justice, rather that the usual watered down arrangements.

Good luck.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

All i need/want is the best piano solo version of Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado (Quiet Nights). Both of these pieces have moved me even on a Midi file which is how much i like them. I want a piano solo arrangement that does them justice. Thank you for the link on the other site:

I have downloaded the pdf files for the two pieces and i will give them a go, they have voice as well though so i don't know whether they will suit a solo performance or not.

You are welcome :)

This being the case, I would definitely recommend you try to get the Jobin "Songbook" edited by his son. Jobin was an accomplished pianist and improviser with a classical formation. The book has the music as he played it, and took years to write, since his son was constantly checking with him the scores, and Jobim would often change it (and make it better). In fact the only reason this book was finished at all was beause Jobin died! Besides his many songs Jobin also wrote a number of purely instrumental pieces (piano solos) that are in the book as well (I think the most popular is "Wave").

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Wave is also a song though if you check the pdf file on the site (there are lyrics for it) but i would love to get a piano solo version of it.
