How pedantic should one get ? Learn how to start from every beat ? Every down-beat ?How does one most efficiently go about this ? The aim is to play from memory starting from "anywhere" in the piece, but the score is needed to begin with (otherwise one would already be achieving the goal). So, play seven times from a place with the score... seven times without ? How far does one go from the start into the music, just a start and a couple beats ?Thanks very much for any suggestions,m1469
Please do not waste your time, attempting to start the piece mechanically, from every successive note, one at a time, all the way through the piece. Please do not bore yourself to death like that. This is how we learn to start anywhere: sit at the keyboard, and hear the beginning of the piece, on the inside. I mean to shut out the rest of the world, and hear only the development of the music. Allow yourself - I do not say make yourself - reach a state of, well some say participation, some say ecstasy - and then start to play. Wherever you have reached in your mind. You will then start anywhere. It is not a mechanical process, memory. It is a combination of many elements: visual, physical, aural memories. The primary in music is aural memory. We must hear first, before attempting anything.Walter Ramsey
