Louis Lortie - knocked my socks off!
on: March 21, 2005, 08:09:20 AM
He did 2 recitals here in Portland this weekend on a Fazioli 308.  First recital was a series of waltzes - Schubert valses nobles, Liszt Soirees de Vienne, Berlioz/Liszt un val:  Valse,  form Symphonie fantastizue; Liszt Valses oubliees, 1 and 2, Ravel Valses nobles and La valse.  Knocked my socks off!  and the rest of the audience!  He is amazing.

Second recital was all Chopin - oh man!  Barcarolle in F-sharp, Scherzo number 4 (my fav) Nocturne in B op 62 #1, and the sonata #3 - when that theme came around for the last time I knew I had a crush!

And the piano sounded incredible!  Don't miss a show like this if it comes near you!
So much music, so little time........

He did the waltzes at Carnegie Hall earlier this month.  I had to miss it but heard it was wonderful.  Also played an F308.

By the way, I highly recommend his Liszt CD - one of his early ones.  It has all three of Liszt's concert etudes.  The second one in particular is a fantastic piece of music, very much underplayed and underrecorded (one usually hears only the thrid - "Un Suspiro").

Lucky you, Dinosaur.  Id have loved to catch that - I've never heard him live, but I can imagine the experience after hearing his complete chopin etudes.  They remind me largely of John Browning's - did you ever get a chance to hear him live?

No, but I understand that both of their versions of the etudes are great.  Sounds like I'm on the hook for a couple more cd's eh?

I saw him play Rachmaninoff Third with the Atlanta Symphony a couple years ago. To top that off, he had a broken left leg, complete with cast and crutches.

His Liszt is amazing.  Heard him play the Totentanz, it was awesome.
