How do you pronounce
on: March 22, 2005, 12:13:11 AM
Leipzig Gewandhaus

Thanks
The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

To avoid starting a new thread, how do you pronounce Jean-Yves Thibaudeau
and Poulenc?

Henselt- Hens as in hence, elt like belt

lutoslawski- loo-(cool)- toe- slav (long a)- ski

le festin d'esope- le as the, fast-een (but fast as in aston), d'e a bit like day, perhaps d-ey, but then again, not really :-\(SteinwayTony tried it  with -eh, but that makes no sense to English speaking people, does it? well it`s exactly this e we need here), -sope as sod

Années de Pélerinage- the A as in bar, then this "e" as in esope :P, the "s" isn't spoken, de as the, pe is the same (I cannot describe it, it`s not pee and not pay, not pie, the english has no e in this way, perhaps you know how Beethoven is pronounce in German?( it`s not beathoven, naturally)). -le- as the, -ree- (as see), -nash ( but the a long agian as in bar or vast)

vogel als prophet- foe-gel (foe as in foe, gel like bagel) als (long a as in bar) pro-feht

Ondine-  On-deen (deen as in seen)

moins vif- well moins is quite difficult, you know how to pronounce "moi" or"au revoir"? same here, vif as veef (the v as in vast, eef is clear)

Le Festin d'Ésope

Fest'an (nasal n) d'Ay soap.

There should be an acute accent (é) over the E in Ésope.

"Soap" would be an Americanized way of speaking the French word.  The correct way to pronounce it is more like "suhp," though it's bound to become butchered anyhow.

I never even thought about how "soap" was pronounced in English.

Maybe it is closer to 'sowp'.

Poulenc ends in "lank" (rhymes with clank, not clonk)

Poulenc ("Poolank") is an exception to the rule.

Sweet day Tro-uh Moreso

The "de" = "day" is terrible, but it is impossible for most English speakers to pronounce "de". I don't know why, because the sound is just like in "learn". Say "learn", then say it again, but don't pronounce the "rn", then replace the "l" with a "d". Et voila! (Ay vo-uhluh!)
