Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's 5th

Does anyone know where I can find a CD or MP3 of this? Did any famous pianist record any of Liszt's Beethoven Symphonies transcriptions?
Also, does anyone know the grade of this piece?
Any other comments on it would be useful. Is it a nice piece?

It does not have a grade because it is too advanced. It's bad to put a grade on everything, you know.

I have not heard the piece, but knowing Liszt transcriptions, the piano writing is going to incredibly ingenius and also incredibly difficult.

Have you even heard the original? (People in this forum should remember that orchestras do exist, but they don't exist only to accompany your playing of Rach 3 ) It's recommended that you listen to the original first, as listening to an orchestral work that is regarded as one of Beethoven's finest on the piano would cause many people to want to burn your house down.

BTW, the first four notes of the first movement is what some people call "Fate knocks at the door". Fate will knock at your door if you don't give the original a listen.

Leslie Howard recorded the complete Liszt's works, including the symphonies of Beethoven.  And yes, they are very very difficult.  I don't quite get the grading thing with the music but you can bet that most, not all, of Liszt's transcriptions are very hard.

avoid his liszt recording which vol. is above 30  (some early ones are nice)

for complete Beethoven Symphony Liszt transcription, Cyprien Katsaris is your answer. There is no finer recording of it. (I don't think Gould's recording is good)

BTW, talking of Leslie Howard, I attened a masterclass at London's Royal College of Music with Leslie Howard a few months ago, he's was in quite a harsh mood on that day. In fact he layed into one of the young pianists in such a cruel manner I'm surprised the pianist didn't leave the room. The attacks on this young player's technique was so relentless that we (the observers) went from surprised gasps to nervous giggles as the tirade progressed. Surprisingly the pianist afterwards took it quite well and put it down to Howard's ego

I agree, you must get Katsaris´s recording, you are not going to find a better recording!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I personally think this piece is a waste of time to learn though. completely not living up to the real thing.

I belive katsaris' recordings of the symphony transcriptions are the best. his playing of the 3rd, 6th, and 9th were equally awesome.

I've also heard Glenn Gould's, but I believe he didn't like the piece very much, and it shows in his playing.

I just listened to Biret's, and I found it to be a little...dry.  A lot of staccato seemed maladroitly placed, and some things sounded chopped off.  It was, however, note perfect, which is always a plus.

Nobody has mentioned the Scherbakov recordings on the naxos complete Liszt series. These are top-notch performances very comparable to Katsaris. Explosive technique and refined musicianship definately make the Scherbakov cycle first rate. Check out his version of the Ninth Symphony for an exciting listening adventure.
