Problem with circa 1950 spinet
on: March 30, 2005, 06:59:15 AM
I just encountered a problem on my (circa) 1950 spinet Acrosonic - it seems that the piano thinks the damper and sustain pedals are being pressed down when in fact they are not!  I can still pump them an all, it's just as if they were being pressed down with my pressing them down, and this affects all 88 keys.  Needless to say, this has affected some of my playing, but my question is "have you encountered this problem before?  How can I fix it?"  I am having a tuner inspect it later this week, but he said he won't know what the problem is before he looks at it, I was hoping to gleam some early advice.  Thanks in advance.

Im going to be honest with you.  A spinet (especially an old
acrosonic) will never be a satisfying experience, no matter how well it's working.  It's probably not worth the money to get it fixed.  If I were in your situation, I would try to sell it to a soccer mom type with more kids than brains (i.e. impulsive, ignorant, etc. haha ;D) for whatever price you can, add a few more hundred dollars, and buy a decent used upright.

and to answer your question, no, I have never had a problem like the one you described.  It's probably a simple problem your technician can fix, but because of my firm disdain for spinets I just hate to imagine anyone wasting any time or money on such an object.  It's completely up to you however.  Best wishes.
