Hi Lea,

Because Parisian life was taking its toll on Chopin's health, George Sand convinced him to accompany her to a place in the country to relax and compose at will.  It was here that he felt the urge to compose big, passionate works such as the F minor fantaisie, the F sharp major barcarolle, the polonaise-fantasie, the third and fourth ballades, and the B minor sonata.

Chopin Etudes are more difficult than Liszt's.  Believe me, although I may sound like a madman.

With Liszt, not every note has to be played, and if they all are played the piece is still easy and requires no work once it is learned.

Chopin Etudes are technically harder.

I am starting to work more on Chopin now than Beethoven.  I soon as I finish Beethoven's Tempest Sonata, I am going to start on Fantaisie Impromptu.  Any suggestions on how to take this?  It seems really hard but when I hear it, it completely amazes me.  My most loved part of the whole piece is when the melody comes out of his runs and it sounds so sweet.  Also, I have been trying to get a hold of a copy of Lento con gran espressione. I have heard it several times before but never thought of studying it untill I heard it being played in the movie the Pianist.  Also if you haven't seen or heard about that movie it is a must for any pianist.  It's the story of a jewish pianist that plays chopin so well it makes you think that's the way he would want it played.  He gets caught up in the war and so fourth won't tell you the story but just that it's a true story and his name is Wladyslaw Szpilman.  He studied with students of Lizts.  Anyways any ideas on how to approach Fantaisie Impromptu?

It has to be Etude Op. 10 No. 4. Just so savage....ruthless..demonical.

The 16th prelude played by Martha Argerich is phenomenally fast and pretty crazy! As is the 24th prelude. I think Chopin's etudes are definitely much more demanding than Liszt's - although Ligeti's are harder than Chopin's!

Also the pianist who played the Revolutionary in octaves was called Alexander Dreyshock and was apparently the Horowitz of his day! A similar story is that of Vladimir de Pachmann playing the minute waltz in thirds and leaning over the piano to hide his hands when doing it so Godowsky could not see how it was done!

Ok, I'd have to say that, as far as CRAZY Chopins go, it doesn't get any crazier than Etude 10/4 (I have actually destroyed a key playing the coda, not to mention two different strings...), Scherzo 1, and the coda (and prestissimo) section of Ballade #2, and not only that, I'd have to agree with Tempest Sonata (who started this post), I'm crazy about crazy Chopin.  Although, I'f you like tempestuous music, go no further then the third of Beethoven's Appasionata (is that what some have been refering to as the Tempest Sonata??  Beethoven suggested reading "The Tempest" by Shakespear to better interpret the work...).  Even Chopin rarely get's any crazier than that.
Et cetera

There is a small section of the third mvt. of Appassionata which Chopin put in his first ballade though, but made it "crazier" (i.e. more technically demanding),

Oh come on . . . it would be crazy without mentioning Scherzo 3 Op.39, Polonaise 5 Op.44 and finale from Sonata in B minor Op.58 as some of Chopin's craziest works.

Nocturnes 7 and 13 are also quite crazy pieces.

lol, i just had to comment on the hilarity of the profuse use of the word 'crazy'.

i agree with most of the selections, but alkan is generally a more 'crazy' composer than chopin - so check him out.

Hi, I would like to contribute my thoughts about Chopin's craziest pieces.
I read the post and i see that the "crazy" refers to technical demanding and emotional demanding pieces....well i would these are my favorite crazy parts:

1. Piano conerto in Fminor - Finale
2. Scherzo no. 3 op 39, and scherzo no. 2
3. etude no. 4, and etude op.25 no. 11
4. ballade no. 1, 2, 4
5. sonata no.3 in B - Finale
6. prelude no. 16
7. allegro de concert op. 46 (one the hardest and most amazing pieces).

Chopin is the best musician that ever wrote music to the piano.  I would put also Berceuse op. 58, because it crazy if you know that it actually variations :) (this piece was supposed to be called "Variantes", but in the end Chopin changed its name).
I have an enormous craving for Chopin's music, which is unusual for most normal and not normal people out there.

here are some for you to listen to (and feel bad about yourself in the process)

winter wind etude
oh and yes the ocean etude is quite overwhelming if you ask me.
double thirds etude. i tapped my fingers onto any hard surface I could find for two months and I am not getting that etude.
ballade no.1, or in other words just the presto con fuoco section
