Frank Bridge grading
on: March 31, 2005, 04:34:13 PM
I was wondering if someone could give the grade level for some of Frank Bridge's pieces. In particular, I was wondering about "April", "Rosemary", and Valse Capriceuse." Grading of any other pieces, would certainly be welcome.
. If he has anything around grade 4 and 5 I'd really be interested.
Thank you.

i believe it to be around grade 6-8. i base this on the abrsm standards. if you scroll down after clicking on level 6 of piano, you will find something by Bridge that seems about the same level as we are talking (i think).

this list seems helpful for analyzing what exactly you are trying to teach. much like the MTNA's syllabus (very explainitory and well thought out). these are a good start to developing your own syllabus (copying many of Bernhard's suggestions off the forum) and getting a 'feel' for what you like to teach, too.
with beginning students, often the cost of buying so much music gets overwhelming. you can buy cd's that have LOTS of sheet music to download from your printer for $15. or so. of course, not all have the right editions, but it's kind of nice for just getting a 'feel' for different music.

do you know why benches fall apart? it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them. hint: buy a bench that does not hinge. buy it for sturdiness.

Do you play Bridge, Pianonut ? (The composer, I mean, not the card game) Do you have Peter Jacobs' outstanding three CD set of his works on Continuum ? It's very special to say the least - well worth having. Imagine my surprise when I found Continuum is owned by a bloke a few miles away here in Auckland. The label records some fine music you won't get anywhere else.

with a sigh. no, i haven't played any bridge. i will look up continuum and listen, though. i am forever playing the same pieces over and over for an upcoming recital. after that, i plan to get more into making up some newer pedegogy books for myself and also some books for various performance uses. i really need to research more pieces than the usual 'standards.' it's from these types of pieces that students get to learn the most about theory (comparing it to other music) and comfortable hand placement. how to move from clusters to clusters and generally easier to memorize than pages and pages of modulations. just bang here and there.
