Any good CPE Bach pieces?
on: March 31, 2005, 05:41:48 PM
I'm sure many of you are into obscure composers that didn't make any impact in their time, but I'm wondering if anyone knows any good pieces by CPE Bach?

Solfeggieto is quite overplayed (and perhaps too elementary).

The ABRSM publishes a collection of some his short works: “C. P. E. Bach – Selected Keyboard Works” edited by Howard Ferguson in 2 volumes (solfeggieto is in volume 2). This is a particularly recommended edition because it has extensive notes on performance and ornamentation. There are some really nice pieces there – none terribly difficult.

Apart from that, there are the sonatas (C.P.E.Bach pretty much invented the classical sonata) which are published by Dover. I particularly like sonata Wq62/19 (H119).

Naxos has a CD of some of the sonatas, played by François Chaplin, and I also recommend highly the CD Mikhail Pletnev recorded for DG of the sonatas and rondos. :D

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. (Hunter Thompson)

Yes, it is. You can find it (edited by H. Ferguson) in volume 1 of the "Selected works of CPE Bach" mentioned above.
