Question on Fingering-Help!
on: April 05, 2005, 06:09:35 PM
I recently started Scriabin's Prelude Op. 11-5 but the fingering is not included and I am having problems finding a fingering that is fluent and works for me. There are some long jumps and no indication of how to finger it. I'm getting frustrated as I've tried several approaches. Has anyone tackled this piece? Any suggested fingerings, etc?

The score I am working off of as well as an mp3 of someone performing it are located at this link:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot,
Ryan

Hi,

which bars do you mean?

I play the piece too, but I don't really know, how to play the notes in the last system?
Does anybody know?

I assume you are talking mainly of the LH ?  Do you have some specific measures ?

lh left hand
rh right hand
Bar (No.Beat)
| next beat
/ alternative fingerings
{} GROUP of alternate fingerings
Pedals/Ties
* footnote

Okay i'm trying to guess where you might encounter problems, and how i'd do those parts (i've not played this at all, and i'm just looking at the score, not sitting at a piano. i'll try do that sometime tomrorow, its 1am now)

1*LH Bar2.2 - here you have a D A F# C# B. What i'd do here is probably 5 2/3 1 2 1. its not that hard, just don't TWIST the wrist to get the 2 to the C#, rather move the hand so the 2 is where it has to be. use the pedal, to hide the jump i guess. and it fits in quite well with the next beat. Bar2.1 you should use 3/1 5 1 2, not 3/1 5 4 5. that way you can get the 5 in Bar 2.2

2*LH Bar 3.2 - D D G# A | A#. similiar to the previous one. but the fingering should be 5 1 3 2 | 1. The rule of thumb here (pun intended) is that the top note of the set should always be the thumb as often as possible. but that, of course is just a guideline.

(If 1 and 2 seem too difficult, you CAN cheat a little by shifting some notes to the RH since its not doing much then.)

*LH Bar 4.4 E E D and 5.1 A G D - I'd use 5 1 1 OR 5 2 1. OR you can cheat again, by using the RH to play the D.

LH Bar 6.2 - D A D A | D - 5 2 1 2 | 1 again on the top d
LH Bar 7.2 - G G C# D D# - similar again

LH Bar 8.3 - 9.3
D# F# B F# | B F# B F# | C A G A | A G A E | F D C
1 2 5 2 | 1 2/3 1/3 4 | {5 3/4 2 1 | 2 3 1 5} | 4 2 1
--------------------  | {5 2/3 1 2 | 1 2 1 5} | -----            <- i'm abit split on these two.

RH Bar 10.3
grace notes-C# f# d# D# | B
5 1 2 5 1 | 5
LH - similar to before.

LH 13.2
F# E B A | DA E B A
1) 3 4 3 2 | {25 1 2 1}
2) cheat and use pedal with {25 2 1 2} or {25 1 1 2}

RH 14.1
This is tricky, thanks to the range of the bottom and top notes.

1) 1 2 3 4 5 - yeouch. i'd stay away from this one.
2) 1 3 5 1 5 - i like this one
3) 1 2 3 5 5 - bit of a jump on the fifth.
4) 2 1 2 3 5
5) cheat. use the LH to play the first note of the appoggs. follow it with a 1 2 3 5.

-----------
now that has all been said, please find out what's best for you, and feel free not to listen to me at all since i'm not really professional. and i might have made mistakes here and there you know...

also, you could be a bit liberal with the sustain, and it is possible to "hide" some same finger jumps (say, 5 5, 1 1, 2 2 eg Bar 2.2, you could also play it as 5 5 2  1 | 2 instead!) added Pedal Markings so you know which two notes i'm refering to.

And its really not that fast a piece. so,take your time... ?  ;)

PS: hey mayla, you posted while i was typing out this monster of a post. :D
PPS: any comments do send them my way... i'm sure my fingers aren't the only ones.
and any errors too. thanks.

edit: URGH i did manage to get a couple of 5's and 1's mixed up on the LH... woops! fixed now i hope.
edit2: added fingers for 13.2
edit3: added "pedal" markings.

Thanks for the replies, especially dazzer with the extensive details. That will help alot. I was having trouble right at the outset in bar 2. I will rey these suggestions and give some feedback in a day or 2. This piece is probably a little bit above my level right now, but it is only one of several pieces I'm working on so as long as I take it slow, I should be ok.
BTW: Does anyone know the grade of this piece?

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi, thanks too,

I didn't really understand how to handle bar 13 and 14.

Do you play d g b d and after it b in bar 13? And do you play d a d and than f# and d?

Sorry, I don't know how to explain it in english!
