Masters recital repetoire
on: April 17, 2026, 04:31:49 AM
Hi All!! I need help choosing some repertoire for my masters recital. It’s a 35 min long recital in 1.5 months time, and I’m going to do the Chopin Barcarolle (9 mins) and the Bach/Busoni Chaconne (15 mins). However I need another 10-12 mins of repertoire to fill, and I’m really lost for ideas. All
suggestions and ideas welcome! Have a lovely day!

A few pieces off the top of my head:
Soler - Fandango (10 minutes)
Liszt - Spanish Rhapsody (11-13 minutes)
Alkan - Op. 39 no. 4 Symphony for Solo Piano mvt. 1 (10 minutes)
Alkan - Op. 39 no. 9 Concerto for Solo Piano mvt. 2 (11 minutes)
Medtner - Op. 11 Sonata-Triade nos. 1 and 3 (both about 9 minutes)
Medtner - Sonata Op. 25 no. 1 "Skazka" (12 minutes)
Medtner - Sonata Op. 39 no. 5 "Tragica" (9 minutes)
Fauré - Op. 74 Nocturne no. 7 (9-10 minutes)

Hope this helps! :)

I'd advise against a large work because you already have two in your program and it'd be heavy going for your listeners/a possible loss of marks if they consider balance. A suite, or pieces from a larger work, or a combination would work better. Perhaps an original Busoni like the Indian Diary to show a different side to him, or drawing on the barcarolle think of a suite inspired by folk/popular music like Ginastera op.2 or some Janacek, Bartok etc.? Or a shorter transcription like Rachmaninoff/Gryaznov Italian Polka.

I agree, I think Rachmaninoff's Italian Polka + a Chopin Nocturne (Op. 48/1 C minor) or Rach Prelude/Etude would be acceptable

You've got two romantic works - so the 3rd should be non-romantic, you need to show some mastery of other concepts of phrasing/expression.  The obvious choice would be a Beethoven sonata. But a smarter choice would be a 20th c. work:
Bartok - sonata
Messiaen - Regard de l'Esprit de joie (from Vingt Regards)
Ginastera - Danzas Argentinas, Op. 2
Copland - Piano Variations
Berg - Piano Sonata
Prokofiev - selections from Ten Pieces from Romeo and Juliet - perhaps Folk Dance, Masks, Mercutio and Farewell.
