i saw the upright piano which had keys made of ivory, they were yellow (it was really old piano) , but i don't know why keys are black and white.   i guess this is because keys then look serious. just imagine how it would be if keys were pinky and green!

Until midway through the classical period, the keys of pianos, harpsichords and other keyboard instruments were black/white instead of white/black like nowadays.

Because the keys were black, organists could easily direct choirs.  What I mean is that choir members can see the hands of the organists more clearly with the keys being black.

Because you can only play the white ones at weddings and the black ones at funerals.

I would LURV to have a piano with black/white (instead of white/black) keys! Tha would be so interesting! Imagine that on a flat black (not gloss) steinway...ahh...soo cool...
