If you've ever opened a fake book and thought, "I see the melody, and I see the chord symbols—but what notes am I actually supposed to play?" you're not alone.

That's where the 2+2 Chord Method comes in. It’s a simple, four-note framework designed to transform basic chord symbols into practical piano voicings. Instead of trying to build large, complicated chords, you divide the work evenly between your two hands: two notes in each hand with the melody on top. The result is a full, balanced sound that’s comfortable to play and easy to apply to virtually any standard.

More than just a mechanical system, this method is a way of hearing and reacting to a lead sheet in real time.

I’m Harry Likas (pianist and technical editor of Mark Levine’s The Jazz Theory Book), and I use this 2+2 voicing approach for almost all of my arrangements and tutorials. It is simply the clearest, most playable way I know to turn fakebook lead sheets into a solid solo‑piano arrangement.

Here’s a YouTube demo:
Hope it gives you some ideas for your own playing.
