Can anyone recommend any good Grade 7 (ABRSM) pieces?
on: April 11, 2005, 09:54:38 AM
I'm looking for pieces that are of difficulty Grade 7 (or above) that I can learn within a fairly short time as the requirements of my music course require a 20 minute recital with pieces that are around this grade. Any recommendations?

The ABRSM book “Short Romantic Pieces for Piano” BookV edited by Lionel Salter are about grade 7 standard, nice selection.
How about Grieg’s Lyric pieces or Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words? And there's a huge choice of Scarlatti. Search under "bernhard grading (composer's name)" to get the grade level.
Look at Torp's excel spreadsheet of pieces with their approximate grades. (That’ll keep you busy!)

20 minutes' worth of music is actually quite a lot of learning, if you're doing it all from scratch and need it in a short time. It depends of course what sort of standard you're playing at already. The whole Grade 7 ABRSM exam is only supposed to last about 25 minutes, including the three pieces, the scales and arpeggios, the sight reading and the aural. So for that exam, probably only 10-15 minutes are the actual pieces. How long did it take you to learn the pieces for your Grade 7 exam (assuming you've done it)?
Are there any other requirements for the recital? - for instance, do you have to have a mixture of periods, or can you choose all romantic or all modern or what?
Do you have any pieces already in your repertoire that you plan to use? If you can say what they are, people might be better able to advise some other pieces that would make up a good programme along with those.

I did my grade 8 last December. I'm sick of my Grade 8 pieces now, but unfortunately, I have to dig them up again because my repertoire doesn't contain enough pieces that are of Grade 7+ standard (the recital is this Friday).
There aren't any particular requirements apart from the difficulty and length, but having a mixture of periods is a good idea. Unfortunately, I HATE the Haydn Sonata, so I'm probably gonna leave it out.
I'm planning to include:
Bach: Prelude and Fugue in G from WTCII
Turina: Sacro Monte
Debussy: Arabesque No.1 and Prelude from Suite Bermasque
That's about 16 minutes there, and I'm not sure if having 2 Debussy pieces is wise.

Have a look here. There are 357 pieces listed as either grade 7or 8. That should at least give you some ideas.

Or since your time seems to be
really
short, just go straight for Greig Notturno Op 54 No 4 which you should be able to stick together with a few hours' work, is about the right length (give or take some breathing time in between pieces!) and which is a piece worth knowing.
