Rachmaninoff fingering
on: April 12, 2005, 12:49:33 AM
I've been working on the Rachmaninoff C# minor prelude, and it's been going well, except for certain parts of the agitato section. I just have a few questions regarding fingering. In the ninth measure into section, the measure starts with a triplet of f#, a, d#, followed by a triplet of e, g#, c#. I had been using 4, 1, 3, then 5, 1, 3. It's doable, but it seems kind of awkward. Any suggestions?

With my hands I'd use 5,1,3 4,1,2 , certain parts of that may not be comfortable for you for whatever reason but you should definitely end on two

I think Bacfokievrahms' fingering is best. I learned it with that fingering 11 years ago and still agree with it. The following several sets of triplets use the same fingering, as well as several times later in the section. As Bacfokievrahms said, you should definitely end on 2, as this minimizes finger movement, and it's awkward to try and cross the 5 under the 4 going that fast.

I have a similar but different question: on the first few measures, i've used the fingering 5-1-3 5-1-4 5-1-4 5-1-2, but i'm now considering something more like 5-1-3 4-1-3 4-1-3 3-1-2. Should I switch to the second, stay with the first, or do neither?
