piano music=boring
on: April 14, 2005, 12:57:15 AM
it's been many years now since i first discovered that listening to piano music can be really boring and uninspiring. this also applies to listening some of the great pianists! i find such activities as listening to chamber music or symphonies, going to museums and seminars, read books more enlightening. am i the odd one out? oouucchh! don't hit me! tds ;D

too much of a new thing, not being familiar with a style... that can make some music less interesting.

I agree with Bob, but I also often feel I would rather play than hear someone else play-- even someone really amazing.  I'm not arrogant, I don't think I play like the great artists do, it's just more interesting for me to be involved in the activity.  I don't know if I'm bored or just feel left out.  If I am bored, it's not by what the performer is doing, it's what I'm not doing.  If that makes sense.

wow, i saw some reaction there. just like the premier of many compositions or ideas throughout history, they usually invite some type of harsh response. just sit back for now on, steinwayguy. perhaps soon you'll see that these topics aren't as inane as you originally think. in fact, probably they are quite common and very interesting to know. again, sit back and relax. best, tds

It's for this reason that I always balance piano music with orchestral, chamber, vocal and opera. They're all superb forms of music; no one should limit themselves to listening to just piano, because the world's greatest music has been written for either orchestra or opera.

i think i am a fan of you now :). oh, btw, steinwayguy, please don't be harsh to waldszenen. s/he believes in what s/he believes, just like i do with my posted topics. perhaps, try not to be too harsh just because someone's shoe size is different with yours. tds

Whynot, I know how you mean in terms of playing - sometimes I feel like playing rather than listening.  It's probably not that you're arrogant, but that you feel more engaged and have more fun when playing.  I feel the same way.  Sometimes I feel a bit left out, too, but you do have to listen.

aw piano music's all right! i agree with Waldszenen- balancing with a variety of chamber, orchestral, choral, etc. music. really depends on the mood you're in, but i love listening to piano music. but hey i love listening to renaissance choral works that others apparently find boring or depressing- how can you think that, it's lovely!
i did go through a phase last year when i didn't really like listening to piano music, but moved out of it when i actually listened to it properly rather than playing it as background music whilst doing work

there's too much for me to listen to, to get bored with piano music. listening to the subtleties of phrasing, tone, colour, pedalling... you know. i've never had a problem with listening to piano music nor have i ever found it "boring". i think it's essential to listen to other types of music though- symphonic, chamber, choral... whatever- for a few reasons- but i guess the main two are a) to maintain some level of sanity and b) for ideas one can adapt for the piano... especially tone etc...

each to their own... *sigh*

Hmm...I dunno that I've ever thought of piano music as boring. I guess it's more likely to be tedious if you're not used to listening to it. Until recently I didn't listen to much orchestral music, and when I started I didn't get in to it right away. Now I go to orchestral concerts all the time. Piano's still my favorite though.  ;D

If you have been playing the piano for as long as I have....50+ years, and teaching for 35 yrs, you might well prefer listening to other instuments better. So my relaxation music is mainly stringquartets and orchestral music and songs. There is nothing boring about piano music, but you need the "other" sound, to really keep enjoying your music, and to keep inspired.

Especially when you want to imitate an orchestra on the piano. Or a string quartet. Or a singer. Or a solo flute, violin, etc. All great for helping you get a nice sound.
