Favourite "water" piece out of these three
on: April 15, 2005, 10:42:38 PM
Possibly the hardest question ever? ;)

Liszt - Les Jeux a la Villa D'este

Ravel - Jeux D'eau

Debussy - Reflets Dans L'Eau

Whisky and Messiaen

I would say the Ravel, simply because at the time it revealed a whole new idea of sound and music writing. Even though the Debussy was one of the first to experiment with scales like the Whole tone and Dorian which are commonly used in Jazz today, the Ravel is completely laced with fresh, innovative musical ideas throughout. And the Liszt, well it is no where near the best of his music.

Indeed, a very difficult question to answer.

First - Liszt, second - Debussy, third - Ravel.
Fortune favours the musical.

that is not one of Debussy's better or more original pieces. "Poissons d'or" from Images book 2 is a better choice

I would also prefer Ravel's Ondine!  :) Out of your selections, I'd take Liszt.

And just to expand our musical horizons, Medtner's Primavera op.39 no.3 evokes the water element most beautifully and successfully. And the closing of the piece is just magnificent.

That's a fun question - my pick is Ravel

Let's also remember Debussy's Jardins ne la Pluie (sp?)
...and Chopin's Raindrop Prelude?  : )

Hey, now there's an idea for a program - all pieces inspired by water, and none of them are so terribly difficult!

For some wierd reason I don;t really like jeux d'eau...(lol im the idiot thou) funny story thou:
I was at a piano competition earlier this year and some dude played jeux d'eau and the adjudicator was like "that sounded like a tidal wave" - lol a bit harsh
I learnt and memorized Fantasie Impromptu In 2 hours!
