Punched Teeth
on: April 16, 2005, 08:01:56 AM
i bought a used spinet..anyways..some of the keys..are not at level with the others...in other words..they are slighty dipping just a TAD..and i was wondering if this could be manually corected?..another thing...is there a way to add firmness to the key's action..or is that just a matter of buying a whole new piano..

mind you, this piano was built in the 60's..so its got years under its belt

thanks

Probably there is lost motion in the keys, i.e. the time from when you touch the key to when it engages with the Action - there is slack. Easy to adjust (for me)

Sounds like the keyboard may need leveling. The paper and felt punchings on the balance rail will need to be added to (or removed) to make the keyboard level. You will need to get a supply of punchings of various thicknesses from a piano supply house to do this job.

The action will also no doubt need regulation; probably the hammers reshaped as well (do this first).

Removing the action from a spinet is a bit tricky, as you will discover. After disconnecting all the stickers from the ends of the key sticks, you will have to tie them temporarily to the action frame in order to be able to lift the action out.
