Which piece should I learn?
on: April 19, 2005, 07:23:06 PM
I just finished Chopin's Raindrop prelude and I want to learn the Revolutionary etude/Fantaisie Impromptu ASAP. But I feel that they might be too hard for me, so I might learn these pieces first.
My choices are:
Clair de lune
Pathetique
Reverie
Maple leaf rag (and can anyone give me a rough ABRSM grade estimate of this?)
EDIT: And Moonlight. Not sure how hard the 3rd movement is, though.  :(

Should I just start Revo. or FI or learn some of these first? And if so, which ones?

Debussy's Reverie was on teh Grade 8 syllabus a while ago, but its lovely...i would advise studying maybe Beethoven, one of the Debussy's you suggest, and the Joplin to get you studying different styles together, and heck..why not have a go at the Chopin aswell!  It's a nice little set of pieces you have..there's a good progamme for a short concert there!

Strange, since Debussy's Reverie is listed on the graded_pieces_all as grade 6. Oh well.
Yep, nice little set. Now if I could only learn all these by next Thursday's talen show... 8)

Reverie was the first piece that i performed for a competition and i think it belongs in grade 7-8 category. This is mainly because of the sweeping arpeggios in the complicated section are quite demanding but make sure you spend time on sorting out the fingering for these and you should be fine. It's not really as difficult as it looks though.

For the final section where the intro tune is revisited with a slightly complicated 3 hands imitation i reccomend crossing the left hand over to provide the higher accompaniment. This means that the main tune remains dominant as you are playing it with your stronger right hand.

You will probably find that Claire De Lune is similar in difficulty to Reverie, both really nice pieces to learn.

The 2nd movement of the Moonlight Sonata sounds easier than it actually is, on the first page you have to play tied notes and stacatto notes at the same time with the same hand... quite difficult but sounds good when finished :)
