Scales technique (non-playing fingers)
on: April 22, 2005, 05:26:24 AM
So when using the thumbs over technique for fast scales, where do you place your off fingers for RH ascending and LH descending? For example you're playing the Eb major scale with your RH ascending: 3:Eb 1:F 2:G 3:Ab 4:Bb Where would you place your 5th finger? Would you place it on the C key or does this not matter? And to continue, you would thumb over to 1:C 2:D 3:Eb then 4 and 5 would rest on F and G until you thumb over again, or does this not matter?

I know this may sound like a silly question but i'm always looking for ways to improve my technique and make sure there are as little problems with it as possible. Thanks

I would say, the pinky stays in the air and is not placed on any key. It would only get in the way. All this provided you are talking about fast, fairly short passages.
