Purcell, Yehudi Menuhin or Chetham's?
on: April 24, 2005, 06:46:32 PM
Was just wondering which of these music schools in England you would prefer to go to or have gone to? Just place any comments that you have of any of these schools!
I recently just auditioned for the Purcell School and was just wondering what it's like and how it is compared to the other specialist music schools in the country.
Cheers, Rob!

Chethams has certainly had a lot of attention in recent years and has consistently pumped piano students into all the UK colleges. they have some very good piano teachers on staff. However friends i have who studied their did comment on the fact it looks and feels at times like prison.
I dont know so much about Purcell although i competed with several purcell students at coll auditions. They have acouple of good piano teachers and are near london by all acounts they have invested alot of money in the buildings recently.
Yehudi Menhuin is of course very famous and very small you may/may not like this origionally it was quite forward thinking and broad educationally as far as these places go - but i dont know what its like now. They seem to produce more talented violinists than pianists but thats kind of logical - students tend to go to the london colleges after finishing there.
However I myself didnt attend a junior school but i had a teacher who taught students at Wells Cathedral School - they have a pretty fine dept and their students go everywhere and they have the bonus of good academic success too!!
Happy hunting - Im glad i dont have to look around anymore. Be consolled All of these schools have a good track record and are known for their quality of teaching/learning.
