Gangster rap (N.W.A.) vs. Petrouchka
on: May 01, 2005, 07:02:14 AM
The parallels are uncanny. Any thoughts? I'd explain it if i wasn't...well...shaped or worked with a hammer and often showing hammer marks

Who is N.W.A., and did they plagarize their work from Stravinsky?

Which brings to mind a funny anectode about Petrouchka, apparently one of the motives was stolen from a street organ-grinder, who sued Stravinsky and won a lot of money. Ironic really, that one of the greatest works of the 20th century was considered to be plagarizing a street musician.

I really cant see any comparisons. NWA is a group of gangsters made up of the rappers like eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, D.O.C., with songs like F*** the Police, Straight out of Compton, and Gangsta Gnagsta. Most of these "gangsters" were involved in crime, ie Drugs, shooting, 2nd degree murder, robbery, ect.

Stravinsky is a musician who writes ballets and beautiful music. No words. No F***ing the police. I know the song Petrouchka, and have heard it several times, but I have not done any studies on it, but from listening to the song, it has no relation at all.

Stravinsky is straight out of Russia with a music genius mind, and NWA is Straight out of Compton with a loaded AK. It just doesn't have any link.

Thats my opinion, but knowing aot more about NWA then i do about Stravinsky, i would have to learn more about Stravinsky to see if there is a link.

No offence but Petrouchka is a ballet...not a "song"...

When I read the topic I started laughing...a lot...Please explain the parallels Rob47...I am really curious...Stravinsky could be considered the public enemy of music...and so could NWA i guess...other than that I don't really know anything else...unless Stravinsky was a gangsta...

NWA is hecka sick, they've definitely set the foundation for 'gangsta' rap today although i really hate commercial rap; underground rap is way better

Ya N.W.A made 2pac, biggie, eminem and (unfortunately) 50 cent.  50 was ok for a bit with In Da Club, and good for him I just can't stand him anymore.  His performance (this is the performance board) of his latest "Candy Shop" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life. What a waste.

But respect to Inspectah Deck man.  His performance on 7L and esoteric's old hit Speakin Words was awesome.  And his timeless verse on Triumph is one of my fav of all....time...

yeah wu-tang clan is nice, deck is definitely one of the most underrated MCs, he always comes with nice verses but his albums arent that great IMO, but Ghostface, Raekwon, and GZA are cool too, their mid 90s albums are classics (Liquid swords, cuban linx, ironman etc)

Eminem was one dope MC..he tore up alot of battles, but like everyone else money changed him..now hes a producer???...i'll still give him the benefit of the doubt though

2pac- he had some good poetry but was over rated..extremely!..

Biggie-eliquent style..but redundant and over rated just like pac..the whole east west gig was their entire fame..sure they had hits before the fued developed..but thats all their recognized as..but i still respect their contributions...(whats this about 2pac still being alive on CNN with footage of him at the mall?)

50 cent- the worste thing to even happen to hip hop.. music ... Planet Earth!!...dry repetetive rhymes about sex and delinquent behaviour over 2 toned synthesized beats...

i saw that pic of you with that Public Enemy shirt on the pic thread...i had faith in you..but after reading your taste...i am dissapointed...

werent you the one saying it was all about underground hip hop?..none of that is underground..
sure maybe black star "talib n mos"..but other than that..

alot of them like jay Z..and alot of Wu members..fell prey to commercialism..

Nas still has it in him, but he over simplified himself...hes begining to just be a successful version of Chino XL..or Cannabis

Binary Star-"reality check"  <--download that and tell me what you think

Binary Star is a collection of really dope insightful MC's..they produce ytheir own beats ..they use alot of violin...and ALOT of piano..they are musically and lyrically inclined to the fullest extent...

Petrouchka and gangster raps have one thing self knows (or just learned from 5 mins of research) in common

they both portray the puppet-like mannerism that is society

Gangsta rap - B$!@#es, H*&#, drinking, sex, violence, all played out in an almost monotonous trivial fashion

petrouchka deals with a man puppet ;D self thinks

This thread is so out there that I just had to join in ;)
I'd say NWA and "@#$% the Police" is more comparable to the Rites of Spring than Petrouchka-- in a social sense, rather than a purely musical one.  Both caused a big stir and really pissed people off by pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable.

And none of those mc's can even touch Cee-lo Green ;D
