The bird and insect populations around here are burgeoning at the moment. Our marigold bed attracts dozens of goldfinches, bumble bees, honey bees and monarch butterflies. These two did not appear to squabble but became grumpy with me.
We are almost at the autumn equinox now but it still feels like summer. We have had a hot summer but with several isolated periods of heavy rain. Perhaps that combination is just right for insects. There are crickets and mantises everywhere. Those in the photo are bumblebees, of which there are many species worldwide. Bumblebees do not make hives but live in nests in the ground in much smaller colonies; usually of not more than a few dozen bees around here. Their cycle lasts only one season and its mechanism is quite complicated. They are capable of stinging but are usually very placid. This year we have had many more honey bees on the flowers too, which is a pleasing sign given all their problems of the last few years.
Just so you know, if you do post, I am going to put a moustache on you.Thal
