Moritz Rosenthal's Carnaval de Vienne
on: May 02, 2005, 02:56:05 PM
I heard Carnaval de Vienne by Moritz Rosenthal played at a piano competition and have been in love with it ever since.  Does anyone have the sheet music or know where I can get it?! I have been looking everywhere!

I have a copy and would be happy to email it to you.  It's a great piece, isn't it?  Unfortunately a little beyond my technique so far.  Do you know his Papillons ?  I can just about manage that comfortably although it needs some more work too.  Also, there's an interesting transcription of Chopin's Minute Waltz which is mostly in thirds. A great fun piece to play, and also to exercise thirds !!

Are you thinking about Schumann's Faschingsschwank aus Wien? I'd think there were two pieces with the same name, but he wrote the Papillons, too...

He also wrote fantasies on 3 Strauss waltzes and on Faust. All equally impossible.

Yes, I know the Papillons of Schumann, having learnt that as a student. The Rosenthal Papillons is a short piece, lasting around 2-3 minutes, and more suitable as an encore piece, while Schumann's is more of a main item on a recital program. I have the fantasy on 3 Strauss waltzes by Rosenthal too, but I didn't know he wrote a fantasy on Faust.

Regards,

Gregory
