different versions of Liszt's B minor
on: May 03, 2005, 03:08:42 PM
I know of 180 or so commercially available CDs of the Liszt B minor.  currently I own 88 versions, all on origininal CD.  Anyone love this work? which is your favourite version?

Deszo Ranki, Sofronitsky and Argerich are my fav's for this piece, in no particular order.  But then again I s'pose I'm not mature enough to appreciate this work as I still much prefer Dante.

You own 88 cds of only Liszt sonata!!!!!! All in CDS!!! OMGGG, you are REALLY passionate about this work. I admit its really really great, and amazing, I love it, but to buy 88 cds... Anyway I think Argerich did a good job with it?

Sounds very stupid to own 88 versions of one piece.

You could have 88 CDs of different pieces.

I don't think it's stupid at all, a bit silly maybe... haha, but i think it takes a lot of intellect to appreciate all the minute and extraordinary differences in all the interpretations, which I hope you will some day develop.

I have a LOT of CDs, of thousands of different pieces.  I don't lack variet at all :)

Oh! I would love to listen to Katsaris, he has wonderful taste.  Is that released on CD? which label?

Levy's is whackoish, but I love it.  No one here likes Pogorelich's rendtion? its one of the most distinctive versions I have heard, his ideas are so unorthodox yet startlingly convincing.

I dont like Horowtiz's or Argerich's, its not quite my taste.  Pollini's is super, and the Japanese pianist Nojima's account is also very nice.

Has anyone heard Kyoko Tabe's B minor? its massive in scope.  Looking at the CD cover its amazing how such a petite and fragile looking woman could produce that sonority.

Katsaris is indeed hard  to find, close to impossible.  Even if you find someone that has it, chances are they will refuse to share it.  :'(

Yeah, I have no doubt they wouldnt sell it to me.. but sharing a mp3 of it should be possible.. although I would really love it have the original... have you heard it before?

It was never available commercially.  No I have not heard it.  Ask Koji about it, but from what I was told, he only heard it at a friend's place, and was blown away by it.

Sadly, even MP3s of rare Katsaris stuff are hard to get.  I have been frequently refused the privilege of hearing these.  You may ask about some live Rach 3 by Katsaris and possibly get it...
