Music School Questions regarding admission
on: May 07, 2005, 06:46:17 PM
Please Help me!
I'm an 8th grader that has auditioned for both Los Angeles County High school of the Performing Arts and Orange County HIgh school of the performing arts. The problem is that I got into BOTH  schools for the piano program!

Now I have to ask WHICH school is better for the piano program? If you're a Alumi, please tell me experiences, good and bad, about that School...

I really need help deciding!  :-\

What you need to do, is have lessons with at least one or two teachers from each school, and pick your perfect teacher.

Never go to a music school based on reputation.  Eastman has (i have heard) the highest transfer rate, because people go to that school based on it's rep, and don't like their teacher.

Anyway, check out the compition, and definitely how many pianists there are (the more, the merrier, the more hookups you have, the more advice you can get, the more talent you will find.  This is why,  IMO, Indiana U is the best school out there, but we're talking highschool).  Of course, also check out how many pianos are usually available.

But more importantly, check out the teachers.  This is a MUST.  When auditioning for college, I checked out Oberlin, Cleveland Institute, Lawrence, etc.  I got into all of them, and ended up going to my "backup" school because of my amazing teacher, and this year I have improved much more then I would have at any other school.  I also got full tuition scholarship.  I have lucked out because Wesleyan's music school is growing every year, and I've hit it at the right time.  Just remember your choice should have little to nothing to do with reputation, especially if it's a highschool.
