Rachmaninov - Prelude in D, op.23 no.4
on: May 09, 2005, 07:32:40 AM
Here's a crude version of the Rachmaninov.  I'm trying to work out some of the finer points.... and also some memory problems.

EDIT:  The new version is located below.

Sounds very nice and I'd love to hear it when you get it polished up more. One thing that stuck out with me is that the section with the right hand chords (before the part with the buildup and climax) sounds too mechanical in and otherwise musically flowing rendition of the piece. Good work.

Edit: Oh yeah, but get rid of the missed notes please :-p And btw I like the sparse usage of pedal, it gives an interesting jauntiness to it where the other recordings i've heard are usually too smooth for my liking.

tone down the second page where the inner voice has the melody, the top is too loud at the biginning. Add more rubato there too. Make sure you're catching the bottom note of L.H broken chords when you pedale. The last page is pretty shaky still. Listen for clean pedal changes at the end of the piece.

Good work, I was competing with this piece this week. (Won first too :))

These are all excellent suggestions.  Thank you!

Since I won't have a teacher for the next three months, it's nice to know I can still find help out there.

I took your advice and practised this piece measure by measure today.

Here's the new, improved result (hopefully~)

I just listened to your recording. Very well played and professional sounding too. I also play this piece and your interpretation is very similar to mine, although I play it a tad slower (around 5 min.).

Thanks for sharing it.

Cheers

I just listened to this. I like your interpretation on the whole. Your tempos are well judged and the music flows. I think you also managed to achieve a good the balance between the left and right hands - not easy in this piece by any meanns. I think your playing is very musical. You have the feel for this piece.

Like allthumbs, I play it somewhat slower, but I think its fine either way. My own recording is posted here:
