3 against 4

I need some help, please.  Is there a way to notate 3 against 4 with "long" note values somehow, so I can learn it?

Or is there a set of words that will help me hear the rhythm? 

I can't pick it up by ear on recordings.

i learned 2 against 3 cuz i could work it out mathematically, but I'm getting nowhere on this one.

Writing out the long rhythm helped me a lot, although it really only works playing slowly:

Dotted 8th - 16th - 8th - 8th - 16th - Dotted 8th

For 4 in the LH and 3 in the RH:
Together - L - R - L - R - L

This has always been the way I have thought of 3 against 4. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes that's quite correct.

Common denominator is 12.  Break the measure up into pulses and figure out the exact order.  Straight three against four is easy, but when you get into more complicated rhythms within 3 against four, it gets quite tricky.  This is when using the common denominator to figure out exact syncronization will help.
