what software do I need?

If I record onto mini-disc or mp3 what software do I need:

to convert mini-disc -> mp3
or compress mp3 to 12mb

thanks

ps anyone know how long it takes to upload 12 mb on broadband on average?

Oh and Ive got a tape recording of a live concert ... Ravel, Ondine.etc How can I get this onto CD
